The disbelief and sadness hang before me, midair, like a thick grey cloud of heavy mist on a cold morning beach side. My winter coat feels flimsy against the chill. I feel somehow spell bound knowing what’s coming, wanting to run backwards, the other half of me wanting to run full bore ahead into the damp knowing of unemployment, just to get it over with. Jerry was laid off today, after 10 months of having a truly “pleasureable job” with Versadial. It seems the economic downturn took it’s toll on them as well.

As the first day ends I feel speechless. And extremely tired. My heart is full of empathy for my husband. And of admiration. I know somehow we will be ok. We always are. Words of comfort are all I can seem to focus on now.

For Versadial’s Christmas dinner last night the employee’s were treated to a wonderful dinner at Luciana’s in Dana Point. The restaurant has been family owned for 2 generations and it was apparent in the delicious food, and ambiance. The staff saw to our every need the entire night, such a wonderful treat. The company we kept, which consisted of most of Versadial’s staff, was even better, and made for such an enjoyable evening. I am sure Jerry feels the same way I do, very fortunate. The dinner menu which can been seen online, offered outstanding choices. For our main course, Jerry and I had New York steak grilled and crusted with gorgonzola cheese, for dessert a choice of Tiramisu or Creme Brulee’. I chose the Tiramisu which was so decadent only the written description will do: Lady fingers dipped in espresso, layered in Marscarpone cheese, Marsala rum and topped with cocoa. I will say 3 things: OMG! Jerry had the Creme Brulee’. His words, “Very delicious.”

To commemorate the evening we had the waitress take our photo. L to R, Elena (Gene’s wife), Gene (Versadial owner), Dave’s wife (apologies), Kathren, Dave, Pat, Jerry, Karen (Scott’s wife), Scott, Dmitry, Dmitry’s date (apologies), Oleg, Oleg’s date (apologies). It was such a pleasure to meet and spend time with the Versadial employees, a great group of people who have come into our lives.
