I’m finally getting around to posting the photos from the USS Midway Museum Tour we went on down in San Diego. The Museum opened to the public in 2004, and in 2007 surpassed 3 million visitors. The Midway is huge, so allow plenty of time for the tour. The Museum is a Audio Tour with headphones and narration. Follow the yellow signs and corresponding numbers around the ship and plan on spending at least 4 hours. The USS Midway is 258 feet wide, 1,001 long and has a 4.02 acre flight deck that took my breath away when I stepped on it. 225,000 sailors served on the Midway, with an average age of 20 years old. Many of their stories live to this day in pictures larger than life on the walls of this ship.

On the USS Midway tour you will encounter more stairs then you will care to remember, tight spaces thought impossible to navigate in, and sleeping and living conditions that show just how resiliant the men and women who lived on the ship were. Jerry was definately in his element while touring this ship.

With Top Gun being one of my favorite movies I was thrilled to stand next to a F-14 Tomcat, the kind of aircraft Tom Cruise!! flew in said movie! Check out those guns. wow!

Midway-Jerry2

By the time Jerry and I got to this portion of the ship my knees/hips were done, so he went by himself. Had I known this would be the section that would interest me the most I would have explored it first. Instead I, like you, have to see this part of the USS Midway through Jerry’s photography. Some interesting statistics: The Midway had 600 men in engineering, 225 cooks, 200 pilots, 40 corpsmen, 2 physicans, 1 dentist and 40 skippers in 47 yeras. 10 tons of food was served daily, 13,500 meals were served daily, 3,000 potatoes were served daily, 1,000 loaves of bread served daily, 4,500 lbs of beef served daily (when served) and 500 pies daily when served.
