Double Nickel Plus One

September 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

My high school friend Sandy recently wrote me a letter commenting on the fact that both her and I were turning the “double nickel” this month, a term I had never heard of before. It’s hard to believe but true and I’m not all that tickled about it. Give me a party though and I’d be there for sure. Since my sis Dee and I are just 364 days apart in age and celebrate our birthdays “together” I’m sure she feels the same way I do. She’s busy moving poor dear. What a way to celebrate another milestone. I’ll be at Disneyland with friends trying for all my heart not to act my age and hopefully not embarrassing them too much in the process.

I was laying in bed last night thinking about this whole aging process and wishing there was a way to have the wisdom of experience and knowledge as well as the growth of confidence at an earlier age. That and a thinner body and I’d be set. Why does it take actual personal growth to realize the important things in life? It’s not only painful to personally go through but as a parent it’s hard to watch our own children struggle. Advice while coming with good intentions when given by parents goes in one ear and out the other, most of the time. Even when a close friend offers or make suggestions on important issues it usually turns into a lesson learned. There is obviously no answer here or I would have already written a book or talked a speech about it and made a million dollars, or two, sharing some with my family and good friends along the way.

All said I wish my sis a happy birthday. She’s far away physically, close spiritually. How I’d love to have a physical day with her. I’d like to thank my family and friends for all they have given me throughout the years, support, fun, love, their gift of friendship. And now I’ll step off this uncomfortable podium and resume my life.

Thanks, sweet-sis-of-mine, for the early BD wishes! Love the pics of us you put up as header for your blog here- how gracefully we have both aged, right?! But I have to agree that it would of been nice to have the knowledge and wisdom that we have now, then, when we were in our younger years (especially when it came to the child-rearing as you said!)!May your BD be the BEST as you hit the “double-nickel” age, sis, and..do try to think of me “moving” while you carouse at Disneyland….lol……love ya…………
