Early Morning Alarm

June 24th, 2008 · No Comments

After an insomniac night I awoke to one of Roxy’s children giving off the sharp shrill notice for “Danger, Danger, Will Robinson” It sounded like this baby squirrel was tucked behind the air-conditioning unit that sits on our back patio beside our bedroom slider. I thought I could sleep through it, but after what seemed like 30 calls I got up. Of course the opening of the slider stopped all alert noises pronto. I went to get the camera to see if I could take a photo of one of the baby squirrels down in the neighbors yard where their burrows are, but when I saw their white dog running around I knew all hope was lost. Angel, the neighbors white dog barked off and on all morning, making me think he saw one of the squirrels come of their burrow to see if the coast was clear.

I took the photo above a week or so ago after a danger alert went out. Jerry and I went out to investigate, came up to our fence and stood still, peering over our fence directly down into the opening of this burrow in our neighbors yard. The baby squirrel finally peeked out only this far, but would never come all the way out while we were there. Earlier this week Jerry said he found one of the baby squirrels dead on our lawn, probably killed by a suspicious looking, lean black cat that loves to hide in our garden and prey on “our” birds. We’ve chased him away after he’s cornered a baby squirrel behind our air conditioner. I’m not sure I want more squirrels around our yard, but I sure don’t want a cat to get them. :)
